Watch your mouth!
Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
I remember one of my mother’s favorite sayings. We heard it every time we said something we should not have said; it was “watch your mouth!”
Another famous expression we heard when growing up was “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you”. That is a false statement. Some of the most hurtful things people remember are words spoken in anger or derision.
The Bible says our vocabulary is an indication of what is in our hearts. Words have the ability to bless and encourage others. They also have the ability to wound deeply. Our words allow us to share the gospel of Christ. They enable us to comfort those in need or a time of crisis
Do we frequently and spontaneously offer prayers for others? Do our words and the manner in which we speak them let others know we have a close walk with the Savior? Gossip, criticism and constant negative remarks can speak volumes about the condition of our heart. A sanctified mouth is a wonderful instrument for the Lord. Walking close to God should produce loving words. Maybe we ought to be listening to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit when He says, “Watch your mouth.”
